The main reason to use vinyl binders is that they are cheap, unfortunately, that vinyl binder costs you more than than you know.
Health.
Yours.
The air in office buildings is up to 10 times worse than the air outside according to the EPA. Office products are a huge part of this. Buildings built to LEED specifications have failed VOC tests after the office supplies were moved in. Plastics and vinyls 'out gas'. That new binder smell is the vinyl releasing a host of dioxins, phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, lead, cadmium, and organotins.
Others.
Studies have documented links between working in vinyl chloride production facilities and the increased likelihood of developing diseases including angiosarcoma of the liver, a rare form of liver cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, lymphomas, leukemia, and liver cirrhosis.
Dioxins from Louisiana manufacturing plants migrate on the winds and concentrate in Great Lakes fish. These in turn are eaten by you or your friends. The dioxin exposure of the average American already poses a calculated risk of cancer of greater than 1 in 1,000 - thousands of times greater than the usual standard for acceptable risk.
Disposal.
It is estimated that somewhere around 100 million vinyl binders are sold in the US along each year. While technically recyclable, vinyl curbside recycling programs don't exist - in fact only about 0.1% to 3% of vinyl is recycled (mostly industrial waste) of the 2 to 4 billion pounds discarded. Those binders alone account for about 35 million pounds of landfill.
In the US there are over 8,000 landfill fires every year. PVC burning in landfill fires may now be the single largest source of dioxin releases to the environment.
There is one company, American Thermal Plastics who will recycle your vinyl binders IF, Cover boards are not be bent, broken or damaged, IF the binders have working metal rings, and donors must handle all shipping costs. This is great if you want to get rid of a new vinyl binder. If you used it for more than a few months, they don't want it.
Even the cheap cost is debatable. Since they generally don't last very long ( the hinges break easily, the vinyl rips ...) you spend more time and money replacing your binders than you would if you had bought one strong and eco friendly Naked Binder in the first place.
