The Problem?
Consider that AIGA members alone specify or purchase $9.1 billion in printing and paper, $650 million in photography and film, and $463 million in computer products. These numbers show how much impact designers can have - and really, they design everything in the end.
3-ring binders, pocket folders and tab dividers make up a smaller portion of all the printing and materials produced, but is still sizable. of the 40-60 million vinyl binders produced in the US every year, nearly all of them go to landfill. Vinyl is toxic throughout it's entire and long life, and there is no curbside recycling for it. In fact, vinyl ruins batches of recycled plastics when it gets into the mix.
How will switching to recycled, recyclable and eco-friendly products help?
You have the power to make a huge difference. Beyond making great designs for your client, you have the power to help lead them to sustainable practices, saving resoures (recycled paper not only uses less or no virgin wood, it saves water, power, creates less air pollution ).
Moving to eco friendly products doesn't have to cost more. What if you could offer your clients better materials, with an inherent sub text to their message and save them money? Let's face it saving money these days is huge. The added message of the eco frienldy materials will resonate with the people who care and be lost on the people who don't. The people who care are exceedingly passionate and supportive, so that message also helps the client message get farther.
